Use the and a before count nouns. English articles come before nouns and are neutral. They are not gender specific.
What are count nouns?
Count nouns are tangible, physical things you can see with your eyes and count, such as fingers, desks, cars or houses. Single pieces of food items are countable nouns. but the concept of food is more abstract and therefore a non-count noun.
